Thanks SSDrive for the advice.I have tried the suggestions given and responded accordingly on the threads you provided.The tests for hard drive would not complete: (Hard Disk 1 (303)) is the error code.The sfc /scannow from command prompt will only complete to 24% each time, with the message that it's unable to finish.So unfortunately still at a loss.I can work through safe mode quite well, even though i'm using the same applications. This suggests there is some process running that is causing this freeze to occur when i start windows normally.How could i find this out?

I gave you these links and procedures as tests so that we could understand what the laptop is experiencing. It is experiencing Hard drive failure. The sfc /scannow should have completed, too, unless the hd is failing.
To verify failure, please goto the following link, download, scan, install and then run SpeedFan; it is the best program for testing hd's. Once launched, goto the SMART Tab, click it, drop down to 'Hard Disk' and highlight yours, then click Perform an online analysis of the hard drive; Speedfan will translate the test's score into easily understandable layman's terms.You need to immediately backup all of the files that you hold dear. BLOCKING ISSUE: your hard disk has 121 pending sectors ( this value is very large and your hard disk should be replaced). Those are sectors that couldn't be properly read and that the hard disk logic is waiting for a write operation to try to remap to a spare sector (if available). According to the Reallocated Sector Count attribute, your hard disk seems to have available spare sectors. A simple disk surface scan won't be enough to force the remap operation. You need a read/write surface scan to remap the sector. The best option should be a tool that knows about what should be read from that sector so that it has some option to apply the best fix to the missing data.
